Dentists examine patient’s teeth and gums and correct dental problems. Most dentists work in private practices and deal with a wide variety of dental problems. They fill cavities, pull teeth, and try to prevent dental disease. They examine X-ray images of teeth for cracks and defects. Dentists also apply sealants and repair fractured teeth. They may make molds to replace missing or pulled teeth. Sometimes they apply crowns to strengthen teeth. Dentists instruct patients on proper brushing, flossing, and use of fluorides. Dentists use instruments such as drills, mirrors and scalpels. They give anesthetics and write prescriptions. Dentists often hire dental hygienists to handle routine preventive care, such as cleaning teeth. This allows the dentist to focus on more difficult dental procedures. Dentists in private practice have administrative tasks. They may supervise bookkeeping and billing. They may order equipment and supplies. Dentists also hire and supervise workers, such as receptionists and dental assistants. Some dentists specialize in one of eight areas. These areas include orthodontics (straightening teeth), oral surgery, pediatric dentistry, and periodontics (treating gums). Other specialties include prosthodontics (making artificial teeth and dentures).
