Most people think of Veterinarians as physicians to the animal world. But at its core veterinary medicine is a science, and caring for the health of animals is only one part of what veterinarians do. Yes, veterinarians treat family pets and farm animals. However, they also research treatments for illness in both animals and humans, oversee food production to ensure its safety, and play a leading role in government public-health efforts. Companion Animal veterinarians care for family pets such as dogs and cats. Large Animal veterinarians treat cattle, sheep and swine (pigs). They work with farmers and ranchers to ensure proper care of livestock. Some veterinarians focus their careers on a specialized area of practice, such as animals like rabbits or birds, which are termed "Exotic." Most veterinarians in the United States have graduated from one of the 31 Veterinary Medical Colleges in the United States and Canada.
