Become a horse trainer!

Horse trainers supervise the preparation of horses for racing and trotting competitions, advise and consult with owners and direct stable staff and jockeys/drivers. Horse trainers feed, groom, exercise, bridle and saddle horses. They accustom horses to reins and harnesses and teach them to pull sulkies. Trainers sometimes teach riders horse riding techniques and horse handling methods. They can supervise and direct stable staff, jockeys, sulky drivers and other workers. Trainers plan, supervise and carry out training programs for horses and select race programs to achieve the best races for their horse. They attend race meetings or other horse-related events. They must be in accordance with relevant laws and keep accurate records of accounts and use correct credit procedures. Horse trainers usually specialize in either thoroughbreds, quarter horses for galloping races, standard breeds for pacing or trotting races or performance horses for events such as show jumping and dressage. Horse trainers may be required to work long hours. Much of their work is carried out very early in the morning and they may continue to work all day. A keen interest in horses, patience, a liking for outdoor work and good communication skills are essential.
